Blue Trees Old Town - Aleid Channing

In this collaboration, Lindsey showed Aleid her original artwork ‘Blue Trees Old Town’. Aleid has a condition which causes her to have double vision. She described what she saw in Lindsey’s piece and Lindsey painted a second piece to describe her response.

Lindsey’s original artwork

Lindsey’s blue trees old town  - 45 x 45 cm oil on canvas

This painting depicts three skeletal trees which rise from the bottom  of the painting of the against a lilac grey blue wall.  The wall occupies the whole of the background with the exception of a rectangle of blue sky in the top left-hand corner. The three trees are loosely painted and appear like ghosts with leafless branches reaching to the top and occupying three quarters of the canvas. The weblike branches on the top left of the painting are silhouetted against the blue sky with a scattering of dried leaves casting shadows on the wall behind.

Aleid’s interpretation

Aleid’s blue trees old town - 80 x 80 cm oil on canvas

This painting can be described in four quadrants. In the  bottom left quadrant Three skeletal trees are silhouetted against a misty blue background, a replica of the original Blue trees painting described above. A soft blue sky fills the top left  quadrant. In the bottom right quadrant the three trees have floated up and are painted at an angle of 45° with the skeletal branches filling the top right quadrant against a light blue grey background. Wall and sky merge and intermingle. This represents Aleid’s double vision, and how she often sees two superimposed images at differing angles.
