Clarke Reynolds
I’m Clarke Reynolds, a 40 year old Braille artist.
I lost my sight in my right eye at the age of six, and was later diagnosed in my early 30s with Retinitis pigmentosa.
I describe to people that it’s like looking underwater; you see shapes and shadows and glimpses of colour. I also say it’s like looking through a thousand dots - hence my attraction to dots in my art, and now those dots mean something.
I remember colour, but for me it’s not as vibrant as it used to be, and I’ve lost certain colours like blues, greens and greys. I rely on my memories, and the worst thing is I see floaters a lot and I have had to train myself to ignore them as it looks like a dirty mark on my art. I use Valspa paint which is already mixed and I get help from the staff in banquet.
By taking part in this exhibition, I want to show the world that a blind person can be a professional artist no matter their sight loss, and I can exhibit alongside mainstream artists. I am also proud of my art would like to show how beautiful Braille can be.
