The Awakenings

Charles Bonnet Syndrome

The Awakenings 5.jpg

This series represents the repeat moving patterns which appear when I wake every morning. The first image was a bit like the advice you get about being alert for retinal detachment. When they appeared, I had just had Silicone Oil removed from my eye (as part of retinal detachment surgery), so I was worried the retina was detaching.

I drew the images every day for a month and took them to the retinal consultant. He explained about positive visual phenomenon (Charles Bonnet Syndrome) so I did loads of research about it. They seem never static and can cover whole walls and ceilings. The animal type creatures remind me of cockroaches which isn't pleasant. Generally, I am now intrigued by what I'm going to see when I wake.
